Advances in Biobased Polymeric Materials in Building and Construction

This webinar “Advances in Biobased Polymeric Materials in Building and Construction “ is to present the main types of polymers used in building and construction, to highlight the properties which make it an appropriate choice of material and to list examples of their applications.

Prof. Dr. Patrick M. Martin (Universite d'Artois, France) will chair the webinar.

The first speaker will be Dr. Ubirajara P. Rodrigues-Filho, from University of São Paulo (Brazil). His presentation will concern Acid Hybrid Urethanesils as Antimicrobial Platforms.

Dr. Anh Dung Tran Le, from Université de Picardie Jules Verne (France), will be the second speaker. He will discuss impact of VOC and moisture buffering capacities of bio-based building materials on IAQ and hygrothermal comfort.

Dr. Marco Caniato, from Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy), the third speaker, will explore traditional methods of recycling wastes, a new method using a biobased matrix, and future developments.

The fourth speaker will be Dr. Nathalie Leblanc from Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy) and will explore with a technical overview the French plant resources with potential for materials intended for eco-construction.

The presentations will be followed by a Q&A Session and Discussion moderated by the Chairs. The webinar is offered via Zoom and requires registration to attend. The full recording will be found on Sciforum website. Next webinars on Sustainable Chemistry will be announced on the journal website.

Introduction
Bio
Patrick Martin was born in Abbeville (France) in 1963. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Picardie-Jules Verne in 1993 under the supervision of Professor P. Villa in the field of raw materials and glycochemistry. In 1994, he became Assistant Professor at the University of Picardie-Jules Verne in the Laboratoire des Glucides where he worked on amphiphilic glycomolecules with Professor Villa and in biological oligosaccharides synthesis with Professor Goethals. In 2000, he received his Habilitation and was promoted Professor in 2001 at the Université d’Artois (IUT Béthune). His current research interests are mainly in the field of natural product chemistry and reactivity like glycochemistry (surfactants, liquid crystals, drug targeting) and biomaterials. He is co-partner of a Interreg V Programm “SmartBioControl” on news biopescticides. He is the author of 104 international scientific publications and 5 patents.

The Civil Engineering and Geo-Environment Laboratory (LGCgE), Artois University, Béthune, France

Introduction
Bio
Vincent Dubois has been assistant professor at Artois University (France) since 2008. He received his Ph.D degree from the Artois University in 2006 under the supervision of Professor N.E. Abriak in the field of management of dredged sediments and their valorization in road techniques. The thesis took place at the Mines Douai (France). Then, for two years, he was Research Engineer at the LCPC Nantes (France) where he worked on bituminous materials, especially on the optimization of the rutting test or the impact of high rate of recycled asphalt pavement in mixes. His current research interests are the development of ecomaterials to propose new low environmental impact materials with high multiphysics performances (thermal, hydric, acoustic). Since December 2020 up to June 2023, he has been the leader of the ABIOBAT project financed by the Region Hauts-De-France (France). This project aims to test some biosourced molecules for making insulating foam for building construction, compounded of minerals binders, earth materials and flax shives.

Dr Rodrigues-Filho obtained his BSc in Chemistry at Federal University of Paraná, Southern Brazil, at 1991 and his MSc and BSc in Inorganic Chemistry at University of Campinas at Sao Paulo state in Brazil in 1993 and 1996, respectively. He was assistant Professor at Federal University of Santa Catarina, then went to a post-doctoral stay at the Univeristy of Namur, Belgium, with professor Jean-Jacques Pireaux on Surface Physics from 1997-1998. In 1998 he was appointed Assistant Professor at Inorganic Chemistry at Institute of Chemistry of Sao Carlos, University of Sao Paulo. In 2011 he founded the Group of Chemistry of Hybrid and Inorganic Chemistry and was appointed Associate Professor. His research interested are in hybrid and inorganic films and membranes for antimoicrobial applications as well as photocatalysyis, photochromism and photoabsortion of metal cations.

Laboratory of Innovative Technologies (LTI), University of Picardie Jules Verne, France

Dr. Anh Dung TRAN LE is an associate professor at the University of Picardie Jules Verne in France. He received his Ph.D degree from the University of Reims Champagne Ardennes in France in 2010. His research focuses on experimental studies and modeling of heat and mass transfer in bio-based materials (such as hemp concrete, etc.) in building envelope and in buildings. More recently, his research activities have been extended and focus on two axes: i) Development and Validation of a Coupled Heat, Air, Moisture and Pollutant Simulation Model Dedicated to Bio-based Materials (CHAMPS-Bio Model). The aim of this work is to develop numerical tool and model that can predict the energy performance, the hygrothermal comfort and the indoor air quality (IAQ) in a room under dynamic conditions. Some of the latest work has focused on the potential of volatile organic compound (VOC) and moisture buffering capacities of porous and bio-based materials on IAQ and hygrothermal comfort. ii) Development of a multi-scale modelling framework focusing on the hygrothermal thermal behavior of biobased materials (hemp concrete, etc.) from micro scale to higher scale levels such as materials, building envelope and buildings. Dr. TRAN LE is a recipient of the Ph.D Thesis Award of Champagne-Ardenne Region, France in 2011. He was Fulbright Scholar in Syracuse University, NY, USA (during the academic year 2019-2020).

Faculty of Science and Technology, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy

Introduction

Dr. Marco Caniato is born in Treviso (Italy) on the 15th November 1980. He is currently Researcher at the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Free University of Bozen. He got his PhD at the University of Ferrara in “Science of Engineering” in 2016, with a thesis on the numerical and experimental analysis of acoustics of timber buildings. He teaches Technical Physics for Mechantronic (English Language). Marco is author of more than 90 papers (H index 11). He has also 6 patents, 1 of them describing a method for recycling difficult-to-recycle materials and wastes using a bio-based matrix. He is also member of the PhD course Sustainable Energy and Technology of the Free University of Bozen. He is also expert and reviewer indexed in the REPRISE list of the MIUR. From 2015 to 2019, he was one of the delegates of the European COST ACTION “Denorms”: Designs for Noise Reducing Materials and Structures, related to materials and metamaterials. Marco participated to many research projects, most of them designed and written by himself, both nationally and internationally. Currently he is the general project manager of two European Projects and Section Project Manager and communication Manager for another European Project. Marco main research is focused on thermal and acoustic properties of Constuction and building materials as well as building elements. Another focus of Marco’s studies is related to the biobased materials using alginate to produce sustainable foams capable to recycle wastes.

Native from Normandie, I obtained my PhD in 2000 and my diploma of ability to conduct research from the University of Rouen in 2010 in the scientific discipline of chemistry of materials with a speciality in physical chemistry of biopolymers. My scientific centers of interest are to develop knowledge about intrinsic characteristics (biochemical composition, morphology, porosity...) of plant materials and their consequences on the performance of agro-based materials in order to value by-products of crops generated during agro-industrial transformations. This research aims to contribute to the current challenges of developing a bioeconomy linked to the use of bioresources. My areas of expertise are non-food valorization of agro-resources, functionalization of agro-based materials with specific performances by formulation and shaping, implemented by thermocompression or by extrusion for example according to the targeted application sector (building, transport, packaging) and study of relationships between composition / structure / properties of biobased materials (thermal, acoustic, mechanical performance, hygroscopic behavior, fire resistance...). Working at UniLaSalle since 2002, I am currently joint head of the research unit Transformations & Agro-Resources, (ULR 7519 UniLaSalle – Artois University) and head of the research team “Valorization in Molecules and Materials for Innovation” (VAM²IN) » of this unit.

On Wednesday, 27 October 2021, MDPI and the Journal Sustainable Chemistry organized the 2nd webinar on Sustainable Chemistry, entitled "Advances in Biobased Polymeric Materials in Building and Construction". The introduction was held by the Chairs of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Patrick Martin and Dr. Vincent Dubois.

The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Dr. Ubirajara P. Rodrigues-Filho, with his presentation "Acid Hybrid Urethanesils as Antimicrobial Platforms".
